MINISTRY: ALTAR SERVERS (YOUTH)
 

VALUE (from our Mission Statement): Discipleship – Catholic Faith – Next Generation

WHAT is involved:

  • being a youth of the parish who has received 1st communion and is either confirmed or anticipating confirmation in the near future
  • serving at the Mass regularly as an assistant to the clergy
  • receiving training in how to serve at the different liturgies celebrated at St. Patrick’s

WHY this ministry is important (its purpose):

  • our young people are an important part of our faith community
  • this is an excellent means of developing a sense of reverence and prayerfulness as one moves from childhood to adult life

MINISTRY: LECTOR

WHAT is involved:

  • reading the scriptures at Mass on a regular basis
  • doing a regular, disciplined preparation to read from week to week
  • being available to read scripture or lead prayer at other parish liturgies (e.g. Stations of the Cross during Lent)

WHY this ministry is important (its purpose):

  • the proclamation of God’s Word is integral to our faith
  • lectors fulfil in their lives the call to continuous formation through their study of scripture
  • the liturgy is the work of all the people, and lectors are a visible example of this

MINISTRY: USHER

WHAT is involved:

  • greet, assist people in finding a seat, a hymnal, etc.
  • keep order during worship, and assist in the liturgy as directed by the pastor
  • take up the collection
  • be a source of information about the parish for visitors and regular parishioners
  • receive appropriate training/orientation in security and hospitality

WHY this ministry is important (its purpose):

  • it creates a welcoming and safe environment for people
  • it is a means by which we come to know each other as a community, our ushers acting as intermediaries between visitors and parishioners, parishioners and pastoral leaders, etc.

MINISTRY: SACRISTAN

WHAT is involved:

  • New sacristans start as assistants, learning how to care for the sacred vessels, the linens, and vestments
  • help in decorating the church seasonally
  • setting up the church for different types of liturgy (baptisms, funerals, Holy Week, etc.)

WHY this ministry is important (its purpose):

  • the Eucharistic celebration is the source and summit of our lives; the proper preparation of the Mass is very important
  • all of our liturgical life as a community and as individuals nurtures and deepens faith, sacristans are integral to creating an environment conducive to our community’s worship.

MINISTRY: INFORMATION CENTRE
 

VALUE (from our Mission Statement): Hospitality

WHAT is involved:

  • staffing our information centre (welcome desk) before and after the Saturday & Sunday Masses
  • being familiar with the basic administrative process of the parish (i.e. how to register, how to arrange for a baptism, etc.)
  • being friendly and personable

WHY this ministry is important (its purpose):

  • it makes it easier for people to connect with the parish
  • it streamlines administration, freeing up resources for other ministries

MINISTRY: COLLECTION COUNTER
 

VALUE (from our Mission Statement): Discipleship

WHAT is involved:
• working in small teams for about 2 hours a week
• ensure the collection from the Masses are accurately recorded and prepared for deposit

WHY this ministry is important (its purpose):
• the Church has always survived and thrived through the sharing of resources
• it is important that a high level of accountability be maintained to those who contribute to meet the financial needs of the community’s ministry


MINISTRY:CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
 

VALUE (from our Mission Statement): Discipleship – Catholic Faith – Next Generation

WHAT is involved:

  • leading children in a special form of the Liturgy of the Word (the first part of the Mass) that is easier for them to understand and participate in.
  • working with a team of other adult volunteers on a rotating basis; preparing activities that help children ages 4 to 9 understand the Gospel
  • organizing some special activities, such as the presentation of the Gospel at the family Christmas Eve Mass

WHY this ministry is important (its purpose):

  • it is important that we offer our children an engaging and life-giving experience of the living Church
  • children’s spirituality should be nurtured so as to grow into a mature faith
  • learning reverence and prayerfulness equips children for life
